Croft British Superbikes
2006
Determined come back for Deano.
Dean Thomas achieved two twelfth place finishes at a very wet
and windy Croft for his come back to racing following his big
off at Snetterton where he broke four ribs and punctured his
lung.
Thomas was pleased with his return as he explains, "It wasn't
bad really, and points wise we came out with two twelfth places
which is pretty fair. To come back with injuries and I'm far
from fit, I'm healthy and I can do all the right things with my
arms and so on but I just don't have any stamina behind me
because I've just done nothing really for six to eight weeks."
Weather conditions were far from ideal but that didn't put him
off, "To come back and get some points is a pretty good result,
but to come back to conditions like this, you know intermittent
rain in the first one and then pouring rain in the second one -
I was more concerned with the second one as I can't afford to
have any sort of impact on the ribs as that would really do me
some harm."
In race one he had a strong start and was running in an
impressive seventh place, well ahead of many of the usual
suspects who weren't carrying an injury, unfortunately tiredness
got the better of him at the back end of the race. "I was
running seventh and three laps from the end I was just
absolutely done, I was spent I just couldn't hold them off any
longer.
Problem was there was a queue of them, so I went from seventh to
twelfth in about two laps. It was disappointing that I couldn't
hang on but on the flip side I was expecting a bit much to be up
there straight away."
Thomas set himself a goal for this weekend and he achieved it as
he tells us, "For me I wanted to be back, my aim was to get
back, qualify reasonably well, get some good points and really
just build it up before Cadwell. I didn't want to go to Cadwell
cold and not being able to ride, so it has pretty much ticked
every box, it has done what I needed it to. I want to go forward
and get myself on a good package with a good deal for next year
and I need to be back up there so for me this is the turning
point now I need to be pushing hard for Cadwell and see what
happens," he concluded.
The next round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship is
at Cadwell Park on the 26-28th August.
